InDrive Drivers Embark On Strike Over Low-priced Fares, Insecurity

April 2, 2025

The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Lagos chapter, has directed its members to boycott the inDrive ride-hailing platform, citing security concerns and exploitative fare policies.

Mr Iwindoye claimed that the platform’s lack of proper rider verification had led to a rise in crimes, including the robbing and killing of drivers.

The union’s spokesman, Steven Iwindoye, announced the decision in a statement on Wednesday, alleging that inDrive’s policies endanger drivers and riders.

He claimed that the platform’s lack of proper rider verification had led to a rise in crimes, including the robbing and killing of drivers.

“InDrive’s failure to implement a robust security system has cost many drivers their lives. Criminals can easily access the platform by posing as passengers and attacking unsuspecting drivers,” he said.

AUATON’s grievances towards the company include their inability to modify the pricing model, which in the long run doesn’t cover running costs such as fueling, maintenance, weekly remittance to partners etc.

According to the drivers, the company is only commission-centered and doesn’t care about their plight.

AUATON spokesman stated clearly that drivers could no longer operate under a system that constantly exploits and oppresses them without offering them basics like security for both drivers and end users. He said the driver’s premium services have been withdrawn pending when the company decides their pricing model to foster better service and operation.

The drivers insisted that they would not prioritise a system that values profit over standards and its partners.

“The cost of fuel and maintenance is on rapid increase daily, how are we expected to keep up”? The union has called for a review on inDrive’s pricing to ensure fair compensation for its drivers. They also demanded an increase in pricing that would reflect the rising cost of fueling and maintenance. Security measures were not left out to ensure the safety of its members.

Indrive on the other hand defended its pricing model stating that drivers were not forced to accept low priced Fares. The company disclosed this via e-mail response to Prime Business Africa inquiry on the matter.

It went further to explain that drivers are empowered with the freedom to choose rides and as well make offers that align with their operational cost and expectations.
