The Trump administration has granted immigration authorities the power to arrest undocumented individuals at schools, hospitals, churches, and other locations previously considered off-limits. The new directive overturns longstanding policies designed to protect “sensitive areas,” sparking widespread debate and criticism.

Our law enforcement officers must have the freedom to do their job effectively and ensure the safety of all Americans.”
Sensitive Areas No Longer Off-Limits
Under the updated policy, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents can conduct arrests at previously restricted locations. These changes are part of a broader immigration crackdown aimed at tightening border security and enforcing federal immigration laws.
Benjamine Huffman, Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), confirmed the shift in a public statement.
“We are giving ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) the tools they need to perform their duties without unnecessary restrictions,” Huffman said. “This administration will not tolerate individuals evading justice by hiding in so-called ‘sensitive areas.’”
Huffman added that expedited removal procedures would be reinstated nationwide. This allows ICE to deport undocumented individuals who cannot prove continuous residence in the United States for at least two years.
Trump Signs New Executive Orders
President Trump has also signed several executive actions to reinforce immigration enforcement. These include:
- Suspending the Refugee Program: All refugee admissions have been paused while the administration reviews the system.
- Blocking Access to Entry Apps: Platforms facilitating unauthorized entry into the U.S. have been restricted.
- Nationwide ICE Operations: ICE agents will conduct nationwide operations to arrest and deport undocumented individuals.
- Strengthening Local Cooperation: ICE will work closely with local governments to streamline immigration enforcement.
“These actions are about maintaining law and order,” Trump said. “Every nation has the right to secure its borders and protect its citizens.”
Strong Opposition From Advocacy Groups
Advocacy organisations have condemned the new measures, warning of serious consequences for immigrant families.

“The changes could deter families from seeking essential services, such as healthcare and education,” said Maria Sanchez, spokesperson for the Center for Law and Social Policy. “This will have a devastating impact on immigrant communities, especially children who are U.S. citizens.”
Sanchez also raised concerns about the psychological effects on children who may witness immigration raids in schools and churches.
“This policy puts children in traumatic situations,” Sanchez added. “It’s a step backward for our nation.”
Religious Leaders Speak Out
Religious leaders have also criticised the new policies, calling for compassion and understanding.
During a sermon at an inaugural prayer service, Reverend John Wilson, an Episcopal bishop in Washington, addressed the administration’s actions.
“We must remember the humanity of those affected by these policies,” Wilson said. “Our faith calls us to protect the vulnerable and show kindness to the stranger. I urge the government to reconsider these harsh measures.”
Trump Defends the Crackdown
Despite the backlash, Trump defended the administration’s stance, arguing that the policies are necessary to maintain public safety.
“We are not targeting innocent people,” Trump said. “We are targeting criminals who have broken the law. If someone is in this country illegally, they should not feel safe breaking other laws and hiding from accountability.”
Tom Homan, the president’s border czar, confirmed that ICE operations would begin immediately.
“We are working with local law enforcement to ensure these policies are implemented effectively,” Homan said. “Our officers will be on the ground, enforcing immigration laws across the nation.”
Broader Implications
Critics argue that the new measures could erode trust between immigrant communities and local authorities, making it harder for law enforcement to address serious crimes.
“These policies create fear, not safety,” said Karen Miller, a community activist in California. “People will be too afraid to report crimes or seek help, which only makes our communities less secure.”
The Trump administration, however, remains resolute in its approach.
“This is about upholding the rule of law,” Trump said. “We will continue to take bold steps to secure our borders and protect American families.”
