I Always Stand By Truth In Fighting Injustice - Farotimi

Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has emphasised that standing by the truth is a veritable weapon in fighting injustice.

Farotimi stated that since he embarked on the cause of fighting injustice, he has never lied against anybody stressing that he always stands by the truth.

He stated this while addressing the audience after his release from the Ekiti State Correctional Centre on Tuesday.

Apparently referring to the ongoing legal battle between him and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Afe Babalola, Farotimi insisted on his allegations against the legal icon in his controversial book, ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.”

Farotimi said: “It is not ever an easy journey when you are fighting evil, but some years back, before I started this work, God told me that the truth is enough.

“It is the only weapon with which you can slay the monster called Nigeria, which is the truth.

“In my war against the evil empire that we all live in, I have never lied against anyone. If I don’t know, I will say I don’t know.”

The activist regained his freedom on Tuesday after meeting his bail condition.

Prime Business Africa reports that Farotimi was arrested earlier in the month following a petition by Chief Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), that he was defamed.

He was subsequently charged with criminal defamation at a magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti after he was arrested in Lagos and transferred to Ekiti.

The court granted Farotimi bail in the sum of N30 million. Additionally, the court directed that Farotimi must produce two sureties, one of whom must be a property owner.

The court also ordered him to submit his passport and should not grant media interviews after his release.

The activist’s arrest and detention had sparked outrage as many criticised actions of the law enforcement authorities.
