‘How Nigerian politicians trigger national crises’

Vice Presidential Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria’s 2019 elections, Mr Peter Obi, believes that politicians are largely responsible for the many crises rocking the country.
He accused Nigerian political leaders of utter selfishness in refusing to deploy public funds to public good.

The former Governor of Nigeria’s Southeastern State of Anambra spoke at the recent 3rd Session of the 5th Synod of Ogbaru Diocese, Anglican Communion held at the St James Anglican Church, Iyiowa-Odekpe. Obi explained that the political leaders and the elite were the major cause of Nigeria’s socio-political and economic troubles.

He said that their desire for self enrichment and lack of commitment to the progress of the country had continued to foster ugly nationwide crises.

Most of the challenges, he said, have economic undertone. Obi argued that if the leaders had sincerely invested in key areas of national development, especially in support of small businesses and job creation, Nigeria would have been a better and safer place today.

“You cannot have an army of world’s poorest people and expect to go in and sleep peacefully at night. Millions of idle people in Nigeria do not know where their next meal will come from, because they are unemployed. We have, today, over 15 million out of school children roaming the streets. Each of these are a ready instrument of crisis in a nation. The political leaders have failed to do the right thing. That is why we have all sorts of crime and uprising in different parts of the country”, Obi explained.

Obi lamented that there may be no end in sight to all the crises and uprising rearing their ugly heads in the nation, except the leaders shun corruption and looting of public treasury and learn to sincerely use public funds for the good of society.

He called on Nigerians to continue to pray for God’s intervention on the affairs of the nation, that God may touch the hearts of the leaders to have the interest of the people at heart.

Appreciating Obi for his gracious presence at the Synod, generous support to the church and unyielding commitment to a better society, the Bishop of Ogbaru Diocese, Anglican Communion, The Rt Rev’d Prosper A. Amah, prayed God to bless Obi and take him to higher levels where he will touch more lives.

Obi was accompanied by the Former Commissioner for Budgeting and Economic Planning, Anambra State, Prof Stella Chinyere Okunna and the Former Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Anambra State, Dr Patrick Nky Obi.
