Lagos Assembly: Obasa Resumes As Speaker After Removal

Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, on Saturday opened up about the circumstances surrounding his impeachment. Speaking during a welcome rally held at his Joel Ogunnaike residence in Ikeja, Obasa described the allegations against him as baseless and fabricated.

“The allegations against me are fictitious and unsubstantiated,” Obasa said. “If I am not the Speaker, that’s not the end of the world. But everything must be done within the law.”

He claimed that his impeachment was orchestrated while he was away, alleging that the police played a significant role in the process.

Police Allegedly Invaded Obasa’s Residences

Obasa accused the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State of leading a team of over 200 officers to invade his Agege and Ikeja residences. According to him, his family was locked inside their homes during the incident.

“My family was locked indoors while over 200 police officers surrounded my Agege and Ikeja homes,” he said. “The Commissioner of Police led this operation just ahead of my removal. It was as though I was a criminal.”

He added, “If you want to claim that I am corrupt, then prove it. I am not afraid of any investigation, but such actions must be lawful.”

Allegations of Mismanagement Disputed

Responding to allegations of financial mismanagement, Obasa denied claims that he had spent public funds recklessly, calling one of the accusations ridiculous.

“Is it possible to construct a gate, just an ordinary gate, with N16 billion? When it’s not the Wall of Jericho?” Obasa asked rhetorically. “Such claims are laughable and show the desperation to tarnish my image.”

Obasa said that while the impeachment came as a surprise, it has not shaken his resolve to stand by the truth.

Obasa’s Call for Due Process

Obasa reiterated his belief in the rule of law, stating that the events leading up to his removal from office showed a disregard for legal processes.

“I am not disturbed by what happened at the Assembly,” he said. “But I believe that actions like this should follow due process. If the Speaker must be removed, let it be done lawfully, not through backdoor tactics or with police intervention.”

Reactions and Support from Party Members

During the rally, some party members expressed their support for Obasa, with a few claiming that his impeachment was politically motivated.

“Obasa was acting like an emperor, and his impeachment was necessary to cut his excesses,” a party chieftain, who preferred anonymity, stated in an earlier report.

Obasa, however, dismissed such claims, reiterating his commitment to serving the public and maintaining his integrity.

“I have always worked for the betterment of Lagos and the people I represent. These allegations and actions are just distractions,” he said.
