Izuchukwu OkosiThere has been reprieve in the efforts to get good medical care for former Green Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu who has been battling ill-health reports Prime Business Africa.
The legendary Nwosu who was the youngest member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winning Nigerian national team at the age of 18 had been ill and needed the support of well-meaning Nigerians.
Nwosu’s international teammate when the country won the AFCON title 42 years ago, Segun Odegbami who himself was the 3rd best African Footballer of The Year same year, has released an update on efforts to bring the onetime ACB of Lagos mercurial midfielder to Lagos from Asaba, Delta State where he is currently receiving medical attention with the support of the Delta and Imo State Governments.
“There is some hopeful news to report. I belive it is right and proper to give an update,” Odegbami noted on Tuesday.
“24 hours after yesterday’s alarm on Henry Nwosu’s health status the earth has moved. His health status remains the same – going southwards. Positive reactions have, however, been pouring in.
“Many concerned Nigerians are offering to lend support in any and every way possible.
“That now appears to create a problem – the nature and coordination of the support Henry Nwosu needs and can get, and how to offer it outside of any direct financial contribution to anybody.
Odegbami reiterated that the Delta State Government have undertaken the financial commitments of Nwosu’s medical bills but highlights the need to go one step further.

“The Delta State Government has fulfilled its pledge by taking full financial responsibility for all of Henry’s care in Asaba.
“With his deteriorating situation, however, everyone in the loop of the conversations since yesterday has agreed that Henry needs to be moved immediately to a higher lev of medical facilities and care,” Odegbami who sits in the board of a leading Sports newspaper in Nigeria stressed.
Odegbami further informed that the Lagos State Government have directed that immediate attention be given to Nwosu who has lived his life mostly in the Festac area of the state as arrangements are made to bring the ailing Nigerian football hero to Lagos.
Odegbami further added that a leading telecommunications company in Lagos as well as the Femi Otedola Foundation are interested in ensuring that they play a part in the revival of Nwosu.
Nwosu who was a key member of the Green Eagles side that were runners up to Cameroon at Maroc ’88 Africa Cup of Nations is an alumni of the St. Finbarr’s College and the Old Students Association of the school all over the world it is gathered are involved at every level of the coordination in conjuction with the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN).
Odegbami affectionately called ‘Mathematical’ in his, playing days thanked everybody striving to ensure that the best health care is given to his former teammate and ended it with a solemn plea: “Henry Nwosu, MON, must not die!”
Izuchukwu Okosi is a Nigerian sports and entertainment journalist with two decades of experience in the media industry having begun his media journey in 2002 as an intern at Mundial Sports International (MSI) and Africa Independent Television (AIT), owners of Daar Communications Plc.
