Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje-led administration in Kano State has paid about N4.9 million as fines and compensations to set free 4,013 inmates across correctional facilities in the state in eight years.
Governor Ganduje who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna stated this while granting pardon to 43 inmates with various offences serving jail terms during the occasion to mark the 2023 Eid-el-Fitr celebration at the Goron Dutse custodial facility in the state on Friday.
“Governor Ganduje’s government has also within the eight years settled fines and compensations for the inmates to the sum of four million, nine hundred and forty nine thousand naira,” Gawuna disclosed during the ceremony.
He stressed that freedom is very essential to human life, and called on the pardoned inmates to be of good behaviour wherever they find themselves.
Controller of the correctional service, Kano State Command, Suleiman Muhammad Inuwa, said that the gesture of the Kano State Government by granting pardon of inmates, paying fines and compensation will assist in decongesting the facilities and ensure a peaceful atmosphere in the yard.
Inuwa called on other states to emulate the gesture and also urged the beneficiaries to be good ambassadors of the Nigerian Correctional Service by being law-abiding citizens through exhibiting good character.
On his part, the Chairman of the council on prerogative of mercy, Abdullahi Garba Rano, thanked the Governor for exercising the power conferred on him by the constitution to release the inmates on the recommendation of the correctional service management and the council.
