Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s Biopic To Feature Grandchildren

‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s biopic is gearing up for its nationwide release on May 17, directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and written by Tunde Babalola, the film highlights the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.

This biopic delves into Ransome-Kuti’s journey from her formative years at Abeokuta Grammar School to her role as a political campaigner and women’s rights activist. talks abut her marriage to Isreal Ransome-Kuti and her efforts in the fight against colonialism and patriarchy, which she showcased by the founding of the Abeokuta Women’s Union.

Selected for screening at the 12th Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFG) in 2023, ‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’ has garnered critical acclaim, earning nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Writing Movie at the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) in 2024.

The stellar cast, including Kehinde Bankole, Ajoke Silva, and Adunni Ade, brings Funmilayo’s story to life. Additionally, the film features appearances by her grandchildren, Femi Kuti and Yeni Kuti, adding a personal dimension to the portrayal of this legend.

Director Bolanle Austen-Peters took to social media to share snippets from the film’s premiere, attended by numerous public figure as Gov Dapo Abiodun of Ogun and former Gov Donald Duke of Cross Rivers State, along with the Kuti family and the cast and crew.
