Former Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has been appointed the new Director General of the National Institute of Sports (NIS).
Shaibu takes over reins with immediate effect from Professor Olawale Moronkola with the mandate to ensure that the NIS raises the next generation of world class coaches.

The National Sports Festival was established in 1974 by the Administration of then Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Nigeria, General Yakubu Gowon, based on the need by the government to improve Nigeria’s performance in international competitions.
The Law granting its autonomy, Decree 31 was promulgated on the 8th of July 1992. The National Institute for Sports is a research and training Institute. It is a Parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports. Inter alia, the Institute is saddled with the responsibilities of producing top-rated coaches, sports managers, and sports scientists and conducting sports research.
Meanwhile former Enyimba FC head coach, Yemi Olanrewaju has bagged a UEFA B certificate in coaching after the successful completion of his theory and practical classes.
Olarenwanju completed the coaching course under Scottish Football Association, expressed excitement after been awarded the certificate.
“I am glad to successfully undertake the UEFA B theory and practical classes under the Scottish FA and then pass the subsequent examinations.
“I am now a proud UEFA B Certificate holder. Thank you to everyone that has been part of my journey so far.”
Olanrewaju, was part of the coaching crew of the People’s Elephant’s title-winning team with Enyimba FC under his former boss, Finidi George in the 2022/23 NPFL season.
