Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Enugu State, Mr Frank Nweke Jnr, has called on security operatives and other relevant authorities to swing into action and ensure that criminals behind the attack of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s Convoy are brought to justice and also prevent further attacks.

Senator Ubah escaped death when heavily armed gunmen attacked his convoy at Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka Local Council Area of Anambra State on Sunday evening, killing some of his aides and police officers attached to him.

In a statement released on Monday, Nweke Jnr who said he received the news of the attack with great shock, commiserated with Senator Ubah and the families of the aides and police officers who lost their lives. He also thanked God for sparing the life of Senator Ubah in the horrible attack.

Part of the statement reads, “I received with horror the news of the attack on Senator Ifeanyi Uba’s convoy in Anambra State. I thank God for sparing the life of Senator Uba and deeply commiserate with him and the families of his aides and the security agents who sadly, lost their lives.”

Nweke, a former Minister of Information and National Orientation, lamented that the spate of violence in Nigeria in recent times has become very worrisome due to number of lives lost on daily basis throwing many families into terrible agony. He pointed out that no one is assured of safety looking at the level of insecurity and breakdown of law and order in various parts of the country.

“These incessant reports of violence are beyond worrisome as the lives of Nigerians are lost daily, brutally cutting short their hopes, leaving families in sorrow and many, without breadwinners.

“No one can pretend to have a cloak of safety considering the breaches in our security and the breakdown in law and order.”

He warned that if the present trend is allowed to continue to fester, it poses great danger to the nation’s democracy.

The APGA gubernatorial election flag bearer in 2023 in Enugu stressed that government should make strong effort to ensure that minimum level of security of lives and properties is provided to create a conducive environment for credible and transparent election and peaceful transition to take place in the country in 2023.

“We cannot continue this way, where threats and violent attacks are used to settle scores of any kind. This poses a clear and present danger to our democracy, especially in an election year.

“The upsurge in political awareness and participation as more people demand accountable, credible and transparent leadership should not be stifled with fear and uncertainty.

“I call on our security operatives and other relevant authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are all brought to justice and more resolute steps are taken to resolve the security challenges in the country and more specifically, in the Southeast.”

He also emphasized the need for concerted efforts to restore confidence in the people and in “our democracy.”

“There must be clear and concerted efforts. People must be assured that they can go about their daily activities without worry and that the elections will take place in a safe atmosphere.

“I believe that our security agencies are aware of the grave danger we face and as such, will deploy all necessary action to bring the guilty to book and prevent further attacks, ” Nweke stated.
