Felix Agu Set To Debut For Super Eagles At Unity Cup In London

Werder Bremen full-back, Felix Nnaemeka Agu, is set to debut for Nigeria at the forthcoming Unity Cup exhibition tournament billed for London.

The 25-year-old who was born in Germany to Nigerian parents, is eager to don the Super Eagles jersey and has been cleared by World Soccer Ruling body FIFA to represent Nigeria at international level. Agu who has played 22 matches this season for Bremen with three goals to his credit, has featured for Germany at the U-21 level.

Confirmation of his eligibility was made via an official statement on the Super Eagles’ Facebook page on Saturday.

According to the post, the German Football Association has provided formal confirmation that Agu has never featured in an official match—senior or junior—for Germany.

His only appearances came in two friendly matches for the Germany U21 team back in 2019, leaving the door open for a nationality switch.

“The German FF have written to confirm that the player has never represented them at any official game at the A and Junior level” the post reads.

A product of the VfL Osnabrück youth system, he signed a four-year contract with Bundesliga side Werder Bremen ahead of the 2020–21 season.

He made his Bundesliga debut against Bayern Munich in November 2020 and has since developed into a versatile full-back known for his pace, positioning, and attacking flair.

His hard work paid off as Bremen extended his contract in 2022, cementing his place as a key figure in the team.

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, had extended an invitation to Agu ahead of the Unity Cup, and with the clearance now in place, the player is expected to join the team’s preparations for the tournament in London.

The Unity Cup, aimed at promoting cultural harmony through football will feature four nations namely Nigeria, Ghana Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica and will hold at the GTech Community Stadium in London  from May 28 -31.
