EPL: Ademola Lookman The Hero As Leicester City Defeat Liverpool At King Power Stadium

For the first time in 35 games, Liverpool failed to score as Super Eagles of Nigeria prospect Ademola Lookman came off the substitutes’ bench to score the only goal of the game which inadvertently has handed Manchester City an advantage in the title race as they are now six points adrift of the Reds.

 

Mohamed Salah missed a penalty with the impressive Kasper Schmeichel keeping away his initial effort before the Egyptian’s followup went agonisingly wide off target.

Liverpool had converted their last 21 consecutive penalties, dating back to a miss by Salah in October 2017.

 

Against the odds and their after exertions in a 6-3 loss to Manchester City, Brendan Rodgers’ men pulled off an unexpected triumph in the space of 48 hours, ribboned with a rare clean sheet, the second since the opening day of the sesson.

 

It was indeed a good revenge for their Carabao Cup defeat last week.

 

The Reds remained in the ascendancy, though, and Schmeichel needed to be alert to keep out Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross after Henderson just failed to connect.

 

Leicester had managed to contain their visitors but continued to rely on Schmeichel, the Denmark international brilliantly denying Salah after 32 minutes following Ndidi and Luke Thomas’ mix-up.

 

It kept Leicester level and they reminded Liverpool of their own threat when the previously quiet Jamie Vardy forced Joel Matip to block after Timothy Castagne’s cute flick.

 

The defeat on Tuesday night was particularly damaging to the Reds as they are set to lose their African contingent for the Africa Cup of Nations.
