Elon Musk Says His Internet Company, Starlink, Will Compete With MTN In Nigeria From August

Internet company, Starlink, owned by world richest man, Elon Musk, will commence operation in Nigeria next month, three months after receiving operational approval from the Nigerian government.

Musk disclosed that by August, Starlink’s service will go live in Nigeria, competing against existing household network providers such as MTN Nigeria, Globacom, Airtel and 9mobile.

Recall that in May, Musk had revealed that the Nigerian government has approved his company’s request to establish a telecommunications firm in the country, which is one of the biggest telco market in Africa.

The approval was given one year after Starlink representatives visited Nigeria in May 2021 to discuss with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) about license and other operational related matters.

The billionaire made the recent revelation while reacting to a question from a Nigerian Twitter user who asked, “When is starlink coming to Nigeria na?”

And Musk responded, “Service turns on next month, which is same time required to deliver a user terminal, so order now at.”

When Starlink debuts in Nigeria, Internet users in the country will join the current over 400,000 subscribers in 36 countries, which are being served by 1469 active satellites in operation as of January 2022.
