This was confirmed in a statement released on Monday, 10 March, which quoted El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, saying it was time for him to move to another political platform that offers him an opportunity to live out his progressive ideals.

According to him, the party has failed to address some concerns he has raised about the party’s current status.

According to him, the party has “strayed” from the vision of its founders.

“I have raised concerns in private and, more recently, in public regarding the capricious trajectory of the party,” El-Rufai said in his resignation letter.

The former Kaduna governor who served from 2015 to 2023 said that at this point of his political journey, he has to seek another political platform “for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish.”

He noted that before taking the decision, he had consulted with his mentors, colleagues and loyalists across the country about the future.

He highlighted his roles in APC including the formation of the party in 2013 and helping to secure the party’s election victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023.

He, however, stated that events in the APC over the last two years have shown that the party leaders are ready to address the party’s “unhealthy situation.”

El-Rufai subsequently announced his decision to join the Social Democratic Party, describing it as the foundation for his future political endeavours. He also announced plans to collaborate with other opposition leaders and groups to develop a unified democratic platform to confront the APC in the forthcoming elections.

The former FCT minister also called on all his supporters and other concerned about our country’s future to join him in the SDP “in the journey towards making Nigeria flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black Race,”  he stated.
