DHL Cargo Plane Crashes Near Vilnius Airport

A DHL cargo plane crashed near Vilnius Airport, Lithuania, on Monday, killing one crew member and injuring two others.

The Boeing 737-400, operated by Spanish carrier Swiftair, was flying from Leipzig, Germany, to Vilnius. The crash occurred as the plane attempted to land, leaving investigators to determine the cause of the incident.

We are treating this as a high-priority investigation,” said Lithuanian Counter-intelligence Chief Darius Jauniskis. “At this stage, we cannot rule out terrorism.”

Crash Scene Near Residential Area

The plane crashed into a residential building near the airport, alarming local residents. Fortunately, none of the 12 occupants in the building were injured, but the crash raised safety concerns.

Eyewitness Marija Petrauskas, who lives nearby, described the scene: “I heard a loud explosion and rushed out. Flames and smoke were everywhere. It’s a miracle no one in the building was hurt.”

Three crew members survived the crash, with one in critical condition, according to police reports.

Theories Surrounding the Crash

The crash’s cause remains unknown, but Lithuanian officials are examining all possibilities. Tracking data from FlightRadar24 indicates the plane had difficulty landing, which could point to mechanical failure.

However, recent incidents involving incendiary devices in DHL packages have prompted concerns about potential sabotage. Earlier this year, fires broke out in containers at DHL’s Leipzig facility due to explosive materials in packages originating from Eastern Europe.

Lithuanian authorities are now exploring links between these incidents and Monday’s crash. Jauniskis emphasized:
“We are not jumping to conclusions, but the possibility of foul play cannot be ignored.”

Swiftair Responds to the Incident

Swiftair confirmed that the aircraft involved in the crash was an older Boeing 737-400. The Spanish carrier assured the public that the plane had passed routine maintenance checks.

In a statement, a Swiftair spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We are cooperating fully with Lithuanian authorities to uncover the cause of this tragic incident.”

Residents Demand Increased Safety Measures

The crash has reignited debates about airport safety and its proximity to residential areas. Vilnius residents have called for stronger measures to prevent such incidents.

Local activist Jonas Rimkus remarked: Living near the airport comes with risks, but this crash shows we need better safeguards. Authorities must act now.”

Investigation Underway

Lithuanian aviation officials and counter-terrorism teams are collaborating with international experts to determine the crash’s cause. They are also investigating whether the crash is linked to the incendiary devices found earlier this year.

Looking Ahead

As the investigation unfolds, questions about airport safety and potential terrorism loom large.

For now, Vilnius residents remain on edge, hoping for answers and stronger preventive measures.
