Former Barcelona right back, Dani Alves has been sentenced to prison on Friday evening without bail by a judge in Spain for raping a woman in a nightclub.

The Brazilian, who is one of football’s most decorated players, was transferred to the prison in a police van after the judge heared his testimony.

State prosecutors had asked for him to be held without bail, and a judge agreed after charging him with sexual assault following several hours of testimony from him, the alleged victim and a witness, the court said.

Alves was part of Brazil’s squad to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and currently pays for Mexican side, Pumas but it is unclear how long he will be at the club for after the negative publicity.

The woman in question claimed that Alves followed her inside one of the nightclub’s bathroom whet he slapped her and raped her.

The alleged assault took place on December 31 (2022) at an exclusive nightclub in downtown Barcelona, police told The Associated Press.

Alves had denied any wrongdoing several days before his arrest. He was taken into custody after he answered a police summons while in Spain.

The woman who is accusing Dani Alves for sexual assault claims that he slapped and raped her in a nightclub bathroom.

Dani Alves, one of soccer’s most successful and charismatic players, was arrested Friday after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Spain.

The veteran Brazilian right back, who plays for Mexican club Pumas, was taken to a prison near Barcelona in a police van after a judge denied him bail after hearing his testimony.

Unless that decision is reversed on appeal, Alves will remain in custody until trial at a still unspecified date.

A charge of sexual assault in Spain can mean anything from unsolicited and unwanted sexual groping to rape. Police and the court’s press office said they could not give any details on the case.

Rape can be subject to prison terms of up to 15 years under a new law passed in 2022.
