BREAKING: Gunmen kill nine in Plateau attack

Adu village, nestled in the serene landscapes of Kwal District, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, found itself at the crossroads of celebration and mourning as Nigeria marked its 63rd anniversary. The village’s dreams of joyous festivities were shattered on a fateful Sunday night when violence struck, leaving nine lives tragically cut short.

Nuhu Bitrus, the voice of the Miango Youths Development Association, bore the heavy burden of confirming the grim news on a somber Monday morning. “Yes, nine persons were killed yesterday (Sunday) in an attack in Adu village. It happened around 9 p.m.,” Bitrus stated with a heavy heart.

The aftermath of this brutal attack altered the course of Adu village’s plans. Initially geared up for jubilant celebrations, they were compelled to change their course. Independence Day, usually a time of merriment, was instead transformed into a day of mourning and prayer, an emblem of resilience in the face of adversity.

While Nigeria commemorated its 63rd year of independence, Adu village, paradoxically, gathered to bid a sorrowful farewell to those who had been taken from them. What was meant to be a day of revelry was now a poignant moment of reflection and unity, a poignant testament to the human spirit’s endurance.

In the midst of their grief, Nuhu Bitrus, representing the village’s youth, eloquently encapsulated their shared pain: “We are not happy that we are today mourning the death of nine of our people in Adu village who were killed last night (Sunday) in an attack. It is unfortunate that while others are celebrating Nigeria’s 63rd independence, we are gathering in Kwal to bury our people.”

Bitrus’s voice echoed a plea that resonated not just within Adu village but across the region—a call to action for government authorities at every level to bring an end to the scourge of violence that has plagued Bassa communities.

As we report on this heartbreaking tragedy, the indomitable spirit of Adu village shines through. Their unity in mourning, their determination to find solace in prayer, and their unwavering hope for a safer tomorrow serve as an inspiration amidst the darkest of times.
