A mild drama played out at the Federal High Court, Lagos between operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) over who would take the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, into custody.

In fact, a local television put it more succinctly: It said the DSS was “in armed standoff with prison officials…”

The standoff followed the bail granted Emefiele on Tuesday during his first appearance in court where he was docked for illegal possession of a gun by the federal government.

Emefiele was arraigned by the Federal Ministry of Justice, for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition but was granted bail in the sum of ₦20m with one surety, following his “not guilty” plea.

As his lawyers were deep into the process of perfecting his bail conditions, both the DSS and NCS officials were seen jostling and waiting to see who would take him into custody from the court premises.

Two Hilux vehicles belonging to the two government agencies were positioned near the entrance of the court room.

The prisons also brought a dog into the court premises.

There were indications that the DSS wanted to rearrest Emefiele despite the bail granted to him by the court.
