The heart of the narrative revolves around Chidera, a high school teenager grappling with the intricate layers of her cultural roots and the expectations imposed upon her by her family and community.

As she embarks on a personal quest for self-acceptance, Aluko’s short film invites audiences into a visually stunning cinematic experience, rich in emotion and symbolism.

Sope Aluko, who was born in Nigeria and is of British-American descent, expressed her deep connection to “Chidera.” She sees the film as a powerful vehicle to shed light on vital social issues and empower the youth. “Chidera” is a product of Aluko’s production company, “SopeBox Productions.” Prior to its screening at AFRIFF, the short film made its world premiere at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in June 2023, an event that qualifies films for the Oscars.

Sope Aluko has gained recognition for her roles in iconic films like Marvel’s “Black Panther” (2018) and “Wakanda Forever” (2022), as well as “Venom.”
