Birmingham City Appoints Mowbray As New Coach, Succeeds Rooney

English Championship side Birmingham City on Monday named former West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray as their new manager on a two-and-a-half-year deal, six days after sacking Wayne Rooney.

Mowbray, 60, was himself sacked by Blues’ Championship rivals Sunderland on 4 December 2023.

Ex-England and Manchester United captain Rooney managed just two wins from his 15 games in charge.

Mowbray is the club’s third head coach this season after let John Eustace leave in October with Blues sixth in the table.

Following the spell by Rooney, Birmingham have fallen to 20th in the Championship, six points above the relegation zone.

The Blues were coached by caretaker boss Steve Spooner in the 1-1 draw in the FA Cup third round at Hull City on Saturday.

Mowbray is the 13th manager in 13 years at the club following the stints of Chris Hughton, Lee Clark, Gary Rowett, Gianfranco Zola, Harry Redknapp, Steve Cotterill, Garry Monk, Pep Clotet, Aitor Karanka, Lee Bowyer, Eustace and Wayne Rooney
