Beatty Sues to Block Renaming of Kennedy Center After Board Adds Trump’s Name

December 23, 2025

U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty a democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio,(D-Ohio) has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to halt and reverse the controversial renaming of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to include President Donald Trump’s name, arguing that the move violates federal law and bypasses Congress, Prime Business Africa reports.

The lawsuit, filed on Monday at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, names Trump, Kennedy Center officials including executive leadership and board members as defendants.

Beatty contends that the Kennedy Center’s board lacks the legal authority to change the institution’s name, which was established by an Act of Congress in 1964 as a national memorial to the late President John F. Kennedy.

According to the suit, only Congress can alter the name of the center, making the board’s December vote to add Trump’s name unlawful and invalid. Beatty, who serves as an ex-officio trustee of the center, is asking the court to declare the renaming void, order the removal of Trump-related branding, and restore the center’s original name.

The legal challenge also raises concerns about the process leading to the decision. Beatty and other Democrats have said the renaming was not properly listed on the board’s agenda and that she was prevented from speaking during the virtual meeting, despite official claims that the vote was unanimous.

The renaming followed a broader shake-up of the Kennedy Center’s leadership after Trump reconstituted the board with political allies and assumed the role of board chair. Shortly after the vote, signage and digital branding were updated to reflect the new name, prompting swift backlash from lawmakers, arts advocates, and members of the Kennedy family.

Critics argue that attaching Trump’s name to the institution undermines its status as a nonpartisan national cultural landmark dedicated to honoring President Kennedy’s legacy. Supporters of the move, however, have defended it as a lawful decision by the board.

The lawsuit sets the stage for a significant legal test over presidential influence, congressional authority, and the governance of federally chartered cultural institutions, with potential implications for how national memorials are managed in the future.
