ASUU Declares Nationwide Strike Over FG’s Broken Promises

July 8, 2025

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially announced a nationwide strike, saying the Federal Government has failed to honor its long-standing agreements and financial obligations to the union.

This decision was made during an emergency meeting of ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC), which highlighted the government’s failure to implement the union’s key demands. These include improved funding for public universities, payment of withheld June 2025 salaries, release of revitalization funds, and renegotiation of the union’s 2009 agreement with the government.

ASUU described the government’s conduct as a “pattern of neglect and insincerity,” warning that this continued disregard threatens the future of tertiary education in Nigeria.

All academic activities across public universities have been suspended until further notice. Several universities, including the University of Abuja, the University of Jos, and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, have already withdrawn academic services in compliance with the directive.

The union emphasized that embarking on the strike was necessary after the non-payment of June salaries even as the government transitions payroll systems from IPPIS to GIFMIS, a change that ASUU contends has been used to delay payments.

Moreover, ASUU noted the incomplete disbursement of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA). Of the ₦50 billion promised, only ₦40 billion has been released, leaving a ₦10 billion shortfall.

ASUU urges its members to fully comply with the strike and calls on students, parents, and the public to acknowledge the urgency of the crisis, stressing that the action will persist until all outstanding demands are met.
