Seun Kuti was charged with assault on a police officer, an offence contrary to Section 356 of the Criminal Code Act.

The police prosecutor, S. A. Adebese had asked the court to remand the defendant for 21 days, arguing that time frame would allow the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to prepare legal advice.

However, counsel to the defendant, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), opposed the plea.

He pleaded with the court not to remand his client, adding that he was not aware of an application to that effect.

Seun, who is the son of the Afro music legend, Fela Kuti, appeared before the Lagos State Police Commissioner on Monday, upon invitation following his alleged assault of a police officer on duty at Third Mainland Bridge on Saturday, May 13. He was said to have slapped the officer after his vehicle was stopped.

He was subsequently arrested and detained following an order by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba to that effect.

He was later transferred to Okay the state’s Criminal Investigation Department, Panti and was, on Tuesday, arraigned before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court.
