LASIEC conducted elections for chairmanship seats in 57 council areas and 376 councilorship wards across the state on Saturday, 12 July.

Declaring results of the Saturday’s exercise at the commission’s headquarters in Sabo Yaba, Lagos, Retired Justice Okikiolu-Ighile said the APC also won 375 of the 376 councilorship seats, losing one seat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

Okikiolu-Ighile, who claimed the exercise was peaceful, applauded the voters for their orderly conduct..

She said there was active participation of the residents in the electoral exercise, which reflects their shared belief in the importance of local governance in service delivery and grassroots development.

The LASIEC boss lauded the media and security forces for their display of professionalism during the election.

She said: “No major cases of electoral violence or ballot snatching, voter intimidation or general breakdown of law and order were recorded.”

According to her, “the election was generally free, was fair, was peaceful, was orderly, was transparent, credible, and devoid of significant obstructions.”

While acknowledging that there was late arrival of electoral personnel and materials  in some areas, she said it was due to some logistical issues.

Speaking on the issue of voter apathy, she assured the Commission’s commitment to deepening voter education and stakeholders’ engagement.

Okikiolu-Ighile said the results of the elections had been collated and announced by returning officers across various wards and local council areas, adding that the presentation of certificates of return to duly elected chairpersons and councillors would be done soon at the commission’s headquarters.
