Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti who is expected to step down as head coach of the 14-time European champions in the summer of 2024 has spared his thoughts on the subject of his former player Xabi Alonso being appointed as his successor.

In the aftermath of the chastening 3-1 defeat against city rivals, Atletico Madrid on Sunday evening, Ancelotti who is billed to become Brazil national team head coach ahead of the 2024 Copa America tournament faced the media ahead of tonight’s (Wednesday) fixture against Las Palmas.

Ancelotti also spoke on the team they will face and injury update of youngster, Arda Güler.

“Las Palmas play very well, they like to have possession. We have to be ready and react after the Derby (defeat to Atletico Madrid).”

Speaking on his decision to pair the duo of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in the derby match, Ancelotti said: “Criticism because I use Modrić and Kroos? The truth is they have not played a lot this season. And every time they played they helped.”

“Xabi Alonso? I had him as a player. He’s doing very well and I wish him to be the Real Madrid manager one day. I love him, just like Raul and Arbeloa,” Ancelotti said of the Bayer Leverkusen manager whose team is second on the Bundesliga table behind Bayern Munich.

Ancelotti rounded off his press conference with the update on his injured players and spoke intently on youngster Arda Guler.

“Arda Güler? He’s fine and ready. He lacks rhythm and he has to get used to how we play, this is normal. He’s a huge talent.”
