The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the Anambra State Government for allegedly sponsoring extrajudicial killings, citing a recent incident where armed operatives of the Ocha Brigade, a state-backed task force, opened fire on traders at the Onitsha Main Market. According to eyewitnesses, several people were killed or injured, including a pregnant woman.
The rights group expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that it was “one too many” and that the Anambra State Government is becoming notorious for failing to deal decisively with armed groups.
HURIWA reminded the government of its primary constitutional duty to protect lives and property, citing Section 33(1) of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to life.
The group called for the arrest and prosecution of task force agents responsible for state-sponsored killings and urged the governor to withdraw lethal weapons from task forces.
HURIWA demanded accountability from the government, questioning how a government with a legitimate mandate could be involved in state-sponsored executions.
HURIWA demands immediate action from the government to stop state-sponsored killings and ensure accountability.
A thorough investigation into the incident should be conducted, and those responsible should be held accountable. The government should prioritize the protection of citizens’ lives and property.
This incident highlights the need for the Anambra State Government to reassess its approach to law enforcement and ensure that its agents are trained to respect human rights and follow due process.
