Security has been tightened across Anambra State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, with security agencies deploying at least 55,000 personnel to protect polling units, collation centres, and critical infrastructure.
The deployment comprising officers of the Nigeria Police Force, military units, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other agencies follows days of operational planning at the Amawbia Police Command.
Senior operatives say the objective is to ensure early response, secure material movement and deter election-related violence.

The materials distributed include ballot papers, BVAS devices, Forms EC8A and EC8B, and other logistics for the state’s 5,718 polling units across 21 Local Government Areas.
INEC officials said the deployment to Registration Area Centres (RACs) would start early Saturday to ensure polls open on schedule.
Speaking during the monitoring, the REC assured political parties of a transparent process and reiterated INEC’s readiness: “We are fully prepared for a credible poll. All sensitive materials are being moved under heavy security to prevent interference.”
Civil society observers from the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room also expressed concerns about election transparency, urging INEC and security agencies to remain strictly professional throughout the exercise. The group appealed to citizens to come out and vote peacefully while avoiding misinformation that could undermine confidence in the process.
Security authorities, meanwhile, said movement restrictions could be announced ahead of the poll depending on final threat assessments, adding that violators of election rules would face arrest.
The Anambra governorship election holds Saturday, November 8, with INEC reaffirming that polling unit results will be uploaded to the IreV portal for public viewing in real time.
