Akeredolu Death: Aiyedatiwa To Assume Office

The governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, aged 67, was announced dead during the early hours of today, triggering a wave of political changes in the state. Although the state authorities have yet to make an official announcement regarding the governor’s demise, a prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclosed that preparations are underway to swear in the acting governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Aiyedatiwa had assumed the role of acting governor during a tumultuous period marked by a protracted political struggle with state lawmakers.

The late Governor Akeredolu had spent three months in Germany on medical leave, triggering a public outcry upon his return to Nigeria. Despite being back, the governor chose to stay at his private residence in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state.

Controversially, Akeredolu attempted to govern the state remotely from Ibadan, leading to dissent among lawmakers who advocated for Aiyedatiwa to be officially sworn in as the acting governor.

This discord prompted discussions about impeaching the deputy governor, but intervention by President Bola Tinubu resulted in an agreement among stakeholders to maintain the existing status quo.

As the health of Governor Akeredolu deteriorated in December, Tinubu again played a pivotal role, and the state house of assembly unanimously endorsed the swearing-in of Aiyedatiwa as the acting governor.

This is a developing story….
