'Ayo Adebanjo Exit: End Of An Era Of A Rare Patriot'

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has expressed shock over the death of elder statesman and national leader of Afenifere, Pa Ayodele Adebanjo, stating that he was a great pillar in the struggle for a new Nigeria.

PrimeBusinessAfrica reported that the elder statesman died at the age of 96 at his residence in Lekki, Lagos on Friday morning.

In a statement on Friday, Obi said his family and the Obidient Movement received the news of Adebanjo’s passing with shock and extended condolences to the family and the Afenifere group.

According to him, Adebanjo’s death is a huge loss to Nigeria and to all who cherish justice, equity, and truth. He said the Afenifere national leader “remained a steadfast advocate for a united and progressive Nigeria.”

“His unwavering commitment to fairness and his relentless pursuit of a better nation have left an indelible mark on our country’s history,” Obi stated.

The former Anambra State governor said he is eternally grateful to God for bringing him close to some great minds who helped to shape his perception of the country. “One such person is Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the quintessential Afenifere leader,” Obi stated.

“I remain deeply grateful for his support during my presidential campaign. His endorsement was not merely a political gesture but a testament to his belief in the ideals of equity and inclusiveness. He stood firm in his convictions against all odds demonstrating his dedication to the greater good of Nigeria.

“The last time I spoke with him, his words left a lasting impression: ‘Always stand on the path of justice.’ Obi said Adebanjo’s advice remains a guiding principle in his life and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding it in honour of his memory.

“In my association with Pa Adebanjo, I come to appreciate Nelson Mandela’s words, ‘I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.’

Prime Business Africa recalls that Adebanjo had endorsed Obi for president during the 2023 presidential election, arguing that in line with the principles of equity and fairness, South-east region should be allowed to produce the president during the 2023 election because the region has not had access to the position since 1960.

Obi urged that as the public mourns Adebanjo, his life of service to humanity should be celebrated, adding that the public should commit to upholding the values he so passionately promoted.

“May his death not be in vain. Instead, let it serve as a renewed call to action for all who believe in justice and fairness.

“As we extend our condolences to his immediate family and the Afenifere organisation, may we find solace in the enduring impact of his remarkable life,” Obi prayed.
