DSS Rearrests Emefiele After Tussle With Prison Officials

In a surprising twist to the ongoing saga surrounding the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Justice has categorically denied the existence of any plea deal with Emefiele, refuting earlier reports.

Addressing the media, Director of Press and Public Relations, Modupe Ogundoro, stated, “The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice hereby states clearly that these reports are completely false.”

This statement came in response to a recent news outlet report claiming that Emefiele had signed a non-prosecution plea bargain agreement with the Nigerian government, awaiting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s signature.

Emefiele’s arrest and subsequent detention by the State Security Service (SSS) shortly after his suspension as CBN governor in June 2023 have stirred controversy and speculation. However, the Ministry of Justice made it unequivocally clear that no such agreement had been reached.

“The legal team representing Mr. Godwin Emefiele had expressed their intention in court at the last hearing to initiate a plea bargain arrangement. However, no such arrangement has been reached with Mr. Godwin Emefiele or his representatives,” the statement read.

The public and media have been advised to disregard the erroneous reports, with the Ministry of Justice reaffirming its commitment to act in the best interest of the Nigerian public.
