SERAP Sues 36 State Govs, Demands Transparency On N72bn Palliative Spending

In a bold move, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken all 36 state governors in Nigeria to court, alleging a lack of transparency in the handling of the N72 billion palliative funds received from the Federal Government.

In a suit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, SERAP is demanding that the governors be compelled to disclose how the funds were spent, including details of beneficiaries and relief provided.

Kolawole Oluwadare and Mrs. Blessing Ogwuche, lawyers representing SERAP, argue that government secrecy erodes democratic principles and creates distrust among citizens.

They emphasize that accountability is fundamental to democracy and that citizens have a right to know how public funds are utilized.

SERAP’s suit also seeks to involve the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in monitoring the spending of fuel subsidy palliatives.
