Fuel Subsidy: Tinubu To Face First Nationwide Strike, As NLC Announces Protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their strike earlier planned to begin on Wednesday (today) over the unavailability of naira notes.

The two Labour unions said they would monitor the availability of cash in commercial banks for two weeks before deciding on the next line of action.

Presidents of NLC, Joe Ajaero and TUC, Festus Osifo made this during a joint press conference on Tuesday in Abuja at the end of their National Executive Council meetings.

Ajaero said the decision to shelve the nationwide strike and protest was taken after receiving briefings from its state councils in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The NLC president said a committee has been set up to monitor situations in banks and report to it at the end of the two weeks extension.

He said the labour union would resume the planned protest if naira notes become unavailable to Nigerians by the end of the two weeks.

Recall that NLC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government on March 2023, calling for immediate action to alleviate the hardship caused by cash and fuel scarcity or face industrial action by Nigerian workers.
