THE Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Garba Abari, has asked Nigerians to make use of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to access affordable healthcare services.

Abari stated this while registering for the NHIS through Sunu Health Nigeria Limited, a Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO).

“I am registering formally as a beneficiary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). It is a scheme that seeks by law to cushion the effects of the high cost of medicines and medications,” Abari said.

According to Abari, NHIS is one of the ways government tries to take the burden of high medical expenses and the general cost of treating people.

the DG said, “It has so many levels by which citizens can key in and benefit from. This is a clarion call to all Nigerians, both those who are working in formal and informal organisations and Nigerians in general to take advantage of the NHIS and the opportunities the scheme unfolds for people to benefit, especially at the time that many diseases tend to afflict not only Nigerians but the world over.

“We need to consistently be on our guard, checking our health status and ensure that at the end of the day, we do not end up with all our savings going for medical bills. This is an opportunity actually that I am using to call on all Nigerians to be aware of the existence of this scheme, and to understand what the scheme is all about, to see the different categories of services that are available on the Health Insurance Scheme and choose the appropriate scheme that fits their level and income.”

Representative of Sunu Health Nigeria Limited, Robert Ukeje, said the scheme was designed for every Nigerian to access healthcare.

“Health impoverishes people all over the world, but with the advent of NHIS, which is a laudable programme by the Nigerian Government,  every Nigerian has the opportunity to go to the hospital without paying. It is a platform for everybody to embrace now, it is very laudable, let us take advantage of the scheme and visit any hospital of our choice,” he added.
