Flamingos Return To Nigeria Tuesday From World Cup Heroics

The Nigeria U-17 women’s national team the Flamingos will return to the country on Tuesday, 1 November 2022 from their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.

Both team coached by Bankole Oloworooke finished in third place after beating Germany 3-2 on penalties.

The game ended 3-3 in regulation time as the Germans came from behind to level things up.

Nigeria Football Federation, NFF confirmed the arrival date although the federation did not disclose details of their itinerary, it however stated that the team will return to Nigeria by 12noon.

“The victorious Flamingos will fly back into Nigeria at noon on Tuesday.

“This is a victory for the Government and good people of Nigeria. The girls and their technical and administrative crew did very well to win something from this tournament and give Nigeria joy. I commend their determination and commitment to a noble goal,” Gusau said.

The feat was the first time an African U-17 women’s side will reach the semifinals and third place of the tournament.

Holders Spain defeated Colombia 1-0 in the final. Colombia had won 6-5 on penalties against Nigeria in the semifinals.

Majority of the players are expected to graduate from the U-17 team to the  U-20.

Interestingly, some of the girls are eligible to play in the next edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The tournament in India was almost called off but FIFA who had suspended the country’s FA from football for political interference reinstated them.

The lockdown enforced by the Coronavirus menace saw the tournament initially cancelled in 2020.
