President Kais Saied of Tunisia has sacked the country’s Prime Minister, Mr. Hichem Mechichi over the nationwide violent protest that occurred on Sunday.

Tunisian citizens took to the streets in anger over the government’s handling of the massive recent spike in Covid-19 cases. The protest added to the general unrest bedeviling the nation’s economic and social sector.

President Kais Saied sacked and suspended the Prime Minister in the parliament, announcing that he was taking over running of government.

The action led to an uproar in the parliament as both his supporters and Mr Hichem Mechichi’s supporters in the parliament began throwing stones at each other outside the legislative chamber.

Armed troops have, however, barricaded the chamber, preventing workers from entering the building.

Mr. Kais Saied has had a long-term feud with the Prime Minister whom he removed from office. The PM enjoys support from the largest party in the parliament and they have come out to accuse the president of staging a coup.
