Chelsea made Potter their No 1 target after sacking Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday albeit there were other notable options including Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane and swiftly received permission from Brighton to speak to him.

A substantial compensation payment – about £16m – will need to be paid and Potter could be in place for Saturday’s game at Fulham.

Potter was at Brighton’s training ground on Thursday but talks will continue later in the day for the former Östersund and Swansea manager.

Meanwhile a report reveals that Potter has asked for three members of his Brighton backroom staff to join him at Chelsea.

Potter had a face-to-face meeting with Blues co-owner and interim sporting director Todd Boehly, where he laid out his plans for the future.
