Jubilation In Rwanda As Teachers Get Huge Pay Rise

As from August 2022, primary and secondary school teachers in Rwanda would be smiling to the bank as the government has said that their salaries would increase by 40 and 88 per cent respectively.

Prime Minister, Dr. Edouard Ngirente while presenting the achievements of the government in the education sector under the National Strategy for Transformation (NST1) to both chambers of parliament on Monday, said the increment was to help improve the welfare of the teachers and this is because of the high inflation in the east African country.

According to a report by PAN AFRICAN VISIONS, the new development by the government of the East African country, would see secondary school teachers have  40 per cent increment while those who teach in primary schools would have their salaries increased to 88 per cent, from about $45 USD to more than $100 USD.

Salary for Diploma holders will be increased by 40 per cent, meaning $52 USD increment, while Bachelors degree holders’ salary will be increased by 40 per cent also which amounts to $62 USD  increment.

The Prime Minister also said “We have also not forgotten the salaries for Head Teachers, Deputy Head Teachers, and support staff working in public and government-aided schools, which have also been revised upwards.”

“There has also been an allocation of Rwf5 billion ($5 million USD) to Umwarimu Sacco (A trust fund for teachers) in order to strengthen liquidity conditions and access to finance by teachers,” the prime minister added.

Since March 2019, the government has been increasing the salaries of teachers by 10 per cent but teachers still live their jobs in search of a better life and this has been of great concern for the government that is why this huge increment is an incentive to get teachers to continue working.
