Kuje Prison Attack: Abba Kyari, Other Inmates Moved To Another Location

Following the terror attack at the Nigeria Correctional centre Kuje, which led to escape of many inmates, others including the suspended deputy commissioner of police, Abba Kyari, who was remanded at the facility have been removed.

Suspected terrorists numbering about 300 reportedly attacked the Kuje custodial centre on Tuesday night with the intention of freeing criminals being held in the facility.

According to a source, the attack which started around 10 pm, lasted for about three hours.

Unconfirmed report emanating from the prison facility has it that the hoodlums launched attack through the back of the prison, planting bombs around the premises. It added that they came in with General-purpose machine guns (GPMGs) and Rocket-propelled Grenades (RPGs).

Kyari who headed the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Unit (IRT), responsible for various crack operations, is standing trial for alleged involvement in illicit drug trade.

They have been remanded in the prison by the Federal High Court.

The Kuje Correctional Centre spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, had confirmed the attack, saying the situation has been brought under control.

Abubakar stated that a combined team of the Armed Squad of the Correctional Service and other security agencies attached to the Centre have responded and restored calm at the facility.

The custodial centre is located in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), about 47 kilometres to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.
