Tanzania has introduced mandatory health screening for all incoming travellers and 21 days of follow-up monitoring for those considered at high risk of Ebola infection, as authorities strengthen measures to prevent the disease from entering the country.

The measures, which took immediate effect under Travel Advisory No. 18 issued by the Ministry of Health on Saturday, October 17 and  Signed by Permanent Secretary Grace E. Magembe, follow an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and seven reported case in neighbouring Kenya which originated from a patient who had travelled from the DRC.

Under the new requirements, all travellers entering Tanzania must complete an online health surveillance form before departure or upon arrival. They are also required to retain the confirmation QR code or reference number for verification by port health authorities.

Health screening, including temperature checks, will be conducted at all points of entry, including airports, land border crossings and seaports.

All incoming travellers will receive health information and be advised to monitor themselves for symptoms of Ebola and other infectious diseases. Those who develop symptoms are expected to report to the nearest health facility or point of entry, or contact the authorities through the toll-free number 199 or by email at [email protected].

Travellers classified as high risk will undergo mandatory daily health monitoring for 21 days through automated messages or other communication channels, in line with national screening procedures.

They must respond to follow-up messages and cooperate with health authorities throughout the monitoring period, even if they leave Tanzania before the 21 days elapse, the advisory said.

The government has also directed travellers and transport operators to observe infection prevention and control measures, including regular hand hygiene, the use of sanitiser and the avoidance of unnecessary physical contact.

Any conveyance found to be contaminated in connection with a suspected case involving a person, cargo or human remains associated with Ebola or another infectious disease will be decontaminated at the point of entry to reduce the risk of transmission.

The advisory was issued in accordance with the International Health Regulations (2005), as amended in 2024, and Tanzania’s Public Health Act of 2009, the ministry said. The advisory also urged travellers leaving Tanzania to comply with the entry requirements of their destination or transit countries.

The ministry said the advisory would be reviewed as necessary.

The measures require routine screening for all incoming travellers, while the 21-day monitoring requirement applies specifically to those classified as high risk. The advisory does not impose a blanket quarantine on all arrivals.
