Jehovah’s Witnesses have eased their longstanding restrictions on blood-related medical treatment, allowing members to decide according to their conscience whether to accept or donate four primary blood components.
The organisation’s Governing Body announced on Friday that members may individually decide whether to accept red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma or platelets from another person during medical or surgical treatment. They may also decide whether to donate blood for processing into components or fractions for another person’s medical care.

The organisation said, however, that its prohibition on whole-blood transfusions remains unchanged, based on its interpretation of the biblical command to “abstain from blood.”
“Each Christian must make his own personal decision about the use of these four primary components in all medical and surgical care,” Geoffrey W. Jackson, a member of the Governing Body, said in the announcement.
Paul Gillies, an international spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses, said the change did not alter the organisation’s belief that blood is sacred but recognised that decisions over the four components should be left to individual members.
Local congregations will not intervene in members’ decisions concerning the components, the organisation said, describing the choices as matters of individual conscience.
The four components have distinct medical uses. Red blood cells restore the blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity, platelets help control bleeding and plasma contains proteins involved in blood clotting, while white blood cells have more specialised applications.

The decision follows another policy change announced in March, when Jehovah’s Witnesses said members could personally decide whether their own blood could be collected and stored for later use during medical treatment.
The organisation has for decades opposed whole-blood transfusions, interpreting biblical references to abstaining from blood as applying to medical transfusions as well as dietary consumption. It had previously allowed members to make individual decisions about certain blood fractions.
The latest change extends that conscience-based approach to the four primary blood components while retaining the prohibition on whole-blood transfusions. The organisation says the revised policy applies to Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide.
