Warsaw, Poland - April 30, 2019: View on Uber car (Skoda) with inscription on the street before sunset

Uber will end its ride-hailing operations in Nigeria on Wednesday after 12 years in the country, bringing its operations in one of Africa’s largest ride-hailing markets to a close.

The company, which launched in Lagos in 2014 and later expanded to other Nigerian cities, said it was withdrawing following a review of its business. It did not give a specific reason for the decision.

Its Help Centre will remain open until Sept. 23 to handle outstanding account enquiries, the company said.

Uber has not disclosed how many drivers or passengers will be affected by the withdrawal.

The exit comes amid higher fuel and operating costs, inflation, currency volatility and other pressures facing Nigeria’s ride-hailing sector. Uber has not said those factors prompted its decision.

Uber will also cease operations in Uganda, while continuing to operate in several other African markets.

The company’s withdrawal brings its 12-year presence in Nigeria to an end on Sept. 2, 2026.
