The Federal Government on Wednesday launched FreeTV, a national digital television platform aimed at providing Nigerians with access to subscription-free digital television services, a move expected to broaden access to information, education and entertainment while supporting growth in the country’s creative economy, Prime Business Africa reports.

The platform, unveiled as part of Nigeria’s ongoing Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme, will offer households across the country access to more than 100 national, regional and state television channels without monthly subscription fees, reducing the cost burden on millions of viewers amid prevailing economic pressures.

Officials said the service will provide a wide range of programming, including news, sports, movies, music, children’s content, educational programmes and dedicated indigenous language channels in Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo, helping to expand access to local content and public information across diverse communities.

The initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises digital inclusion, economic opportunity, local enterprise development and the use of technology to improve the quality of life for citizens.

Beyond expanding television access, the government said FreeTV is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s broadcasting and creative industries by creating new distribution channels for locally produced content and generating employment opportunities across the media value chain.

The platform will be available through satellite and terrestrial transmission, as well as the FreeTV mobile application, enabling users to access content regardless of whether they reside in major cities, smaller towns or underserved rural communities. The wider reach is expected to accelerate digital inclusion and ensure that more Nigerians benefit from the country’s transition to digital broadcasting.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Charles Ebuebu, said the platform reflects the administration’s commitment to ensuring that all Nigerians can participate in the digital economy irrespective of income level or location.

“FreeTV speaks directly to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of Renewed Hope towards expanding access, creating opportunity and ensuring that every Nigerian, regardless of location or income, can benefit from the digital economy. With FreeTV, families across Nigeria can enjoy quality digital television without a monthly subscription, while our local content producers, technicians and young creatives gain new platforms and new jobs,” he said.

NBC’s Sledgehammer On Broadcast Media Is Unnecessary

According to the NBC, Nigerians will not be required to purchase new television sets to access the service. Existing television sets can operate with compatible DVB-T2 or DVB-S2 decoders, while households already using compatible free-to-air decoders may not need to acquire additional equipment.

The government further disclosed that regional production studios located in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kano and Benin will support content creation and broadcasting activities under the initiative. The facilities are expected to create opportunities for producers, editors, camera operators, sound engineers, technicians and other creative professionals, while stimulating investment in local media production.

Industry observers say the rollout could significantly expand audience reach for broadcasters and content creators, opening up new revenue and employment opportunities as Nigeria advances towards full digital broadcasting.

The final nationwide analogue switch-off remains scheduled for December 31, 2028, with authorities encouraging Nigerians to verify the compatibility of their decoders and begin preparing for the transition.

The launch of FreeTV marks another milestone in Nigeria’s digital broadcasting journey, with the government projecting that wider access to free television services will enhance information dissemination, promote local content development and deepen participation in the country’s growing digital economy.
