Trump Renews Attack on Iran, Revives Criticism of Obama, Biden Over Nuclear Deal

United States President Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of Iran and former American leaders Barack Obama and Joe Biden, accusing Tehran of deceiving Washington for decades while benefiting from policies implemented under previous administrations.

In a statement posted on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump alleged that Iran had spent 47 years “playing games” with the United States and the international community through prolonged negotiations and delays. He further accused the Obama administration of empowering Tehran through financial concessions linked to the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Trump specifically referenced the controversial $1.7 billion payment made to Iran during Obama’s presidency, claiming the funds were flown into Tehran in cash. The payment has remained a major point of political contention in the United States since it was disclosed in 2016.

However, official accounts from the Obama administration and subsequent fact-checks stated that the payment was tied to the settlement of a decades-old dispute involving frozen Iranian assets connected to pre-1979 military equipment purchases. U.S. officials at the time maintained that the funds were not ransom payments but part of a legal settlement reached alongside the release of American detainees.

Trump also alleged that Iran had supported attacks against Americans over the years and accused the Iranian government of violently suppressing anti-government protests. He claimed that tens of thousands of protesters had been killed in recent crackdowns, although independent verification of the figure remains unclear.

The latest remarks come amid renewed tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security concerns, and ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing hostilities in the Middle East.

Recent international reports indicate that indirect contacts and ceasefire-related discussions involving Iran and the United States have continued through regional intermediaries, even as Washington maintains pressure on Tehran over its nuclear activities and military posture in the Gulf region.

Trump concluded his statement by warning that Iran “will be laughing no longer,” signalling a continuation of his hardline stance toward the Islamic Republic, a policy direction that previously included sweeping economic sanctions and the withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 nuclear agreement during his first term.
