The Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has ordered a strengthened security response in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State following a deadly attack on Guyaku community that left at least 29 people dead.
The directive came after the governor visited the affected community on Monday for an on-the-spot assessment, where he met survivors, families of victims, and local leaders still reeling from the Sunday assault.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelDescribing the attack as “tragic and unacceptable,” Fintiri said the state government would intensify coordination with security agencies to prevent a recurrence and restore confidence in vulnerable communities.
“My heart breaks for the people of Guyaku in Gombi LGA. Today, I stood on the ground where our brothers and sisters were cruelly taken from us,” the governor said during his visit.
Aides confirmed that no fewer than 29 people were killed when armed assailants stormed the community and opened fire for several hours, targeting residents gathered in open spaces, including a football pitch.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers moved through the community shooting indiscriminately, leaving widespread panic and destruction in their wake.
In response, authorities say security deployments are being reinforced in Gombi and surrounding areas, with renewed patrols and intelligence efforts aimed at tracking the perpetrators and preventing further attacks.
While the motive behind the assault remains unclear, the incident adds to ongoing security concerns in parts of northeastern Nigeria, where rural communities have remained vulnerable to periodic armed violence.
The state government has also indicated plans to expand community-level security coordination and early warning mechanisms as part of broader efforts to curb attacks in remote settlements.
