Opposition Leaders Agree on Single Candidate for 2027 at Ibadan Summit

April 25, 2026

Opposition political leaders in Nigeria have agreed in principle to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, following the conclusion of the National Summit of Opposition Political Party Leaders held in Ibadan, Oyo State, Prime Business Africa reports.

The resolution formed part of a communiqué issued at the end of the summit, which was chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

The high-level meeting brought together key opposition figures across party lines, including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, among others.

In the communiqué presented at the close of deliberations, the opposition leaders declared their collective resolve to resist any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s multi-party democracy, warning against what they described as the risk of the country drifting toward a one-party state.

They reaffirmed their commitment to actively participate in the 2027 general elections, pledging to field credible candidates across all elective positions nationwide.

A major highlight of the resolutions was the agreement to work towards producing a unified presidential candidate, a move widely seen as an effort to avoid the fragmentation that has weakened opposition chances in previous election cycles.

The summit also raised concerns over the credibility and neutrality of Nigeria’s electoral process, calling for urgent reforms, including a review of the Electoral Act and adjustments to existing electoral guidelines to ensure fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.

In addition, participants called for the immediate release of political actors allegedly facing harassment, stressing the need to safeguard democratic rights and ensure a level playing field for all stakeholders.

The leaders commended Nigerians for their resilience amid current political and economic challenges and urged continued faith in the democratic process.

They also expressed appreciation to Governor Makinde and the people of Oyo State for hosting what they described as a timely and critical engagement on the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

The Ibadan summit marks one of the most coordinated efforts by opposition leaders in recent times to build consensus ahead of the 2027 elections, with the proposed single-candidate strategy likely to shape political alignments in the coming months.
