Trump Hosts Germany’s Merz Amid Questions over Iran Strike Support

March 3, 2026

Donald Trump hosted Germany’s chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House on Tuesday, in their first meeting since Washington joined Israeli strikes on Iran, a move that has intensified conflict in the Middle East.

The visit, initially planned to focus on the war in Ukraine and strained EU-US trade ties, has been overshadowed by the escalating crisis with Tehran and growing online speculation about Germany’s possible role in the strikes.

Unverified videos circulating on social media have fuelled claims that German-made weapons may have been used in the conflict, though no official evidence has been presented and Berlin has not confirmed any involvement.

Germany, a key US ally, has taken a cautious stance. Merz, a vocal critic of Iran’s leadership, said Berlin shared the Iranian people’s “relief” at what he described as the weakening of the country’s clerical establishment, but stopped short of endorsing the legality of the strikes.

Berlin, alongside France and Britain, has said it would only support “defensive actions” to protect allied interests in the Gulf, drawing criticism from some US officials who described the response as insufficient.

The meeting comes as tensions continue to rise following US and Israeli attacks on Iranian targets, with Tehran responding by striking US positions and allied facilities in the region.

The conflict has also raised concerns about broader geopolitical fallout, including energy security risks linked to the Strait of Hormuz and the stability of global markets.

Despite differences in style and policy, Merz and Trump have maintained a working relationship. The German leader has boosted defence spending in line with long-standing US demands, while also calling for greater European independence in security matters.

At the same time, Merz has urged Washington to work with its allies to rebuild trust, warning earlier this year of a “deep rift” in transatlantic relations.

Trade is also expected to feature in talks, with Berlin seeking clarity on US tariff policies and pushing for a more predictable economic framework between the United States and the European Union.

Analysts say the meeting underscores the challenge facing Western allies as they attempt to balance unity with differing approaches to the widening conflict involving Iran.
