Fresh unrest gripped Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday after youths barricaded the main roadway connecting the area to Jos, protesting the killing of villagers in a late-night attack by gunmen.

The protest followed Sunday’s assault on Ratatis and Dorowa Babuje communities, where armed men reportedly invaded the villages under cover of darkness, shooting sporadically and fleeing before security operatives could respond. Local accounts indicate that at least seven people were killed during the initial onslaught, while additional bodies recovered hours later pushed the reported death toll to 10.

Residents said several others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to medical facilities within the locality. The remains of the deceased were deposited in morgues as families grappled with the aftermath.

By dawn on Monday, groups of youths, joined by women and other community members, mounted roadblocks along the Barkin Ladi–Jos highway, halting vehicular movement and demanding swift intervention from authorities. Protesters accused security agencies of failing to prevent recurring attacks despite repeated assurances of improved surveillance in vulnerable communities.

Community leaders described the incident as part of a troubling pattern of violence affecting Barkin Ladi and neighbouring Riyom Local Government Area, where rural settlements have repeatedly come under assault in recent years.

As of press time, there was no detailed official statement outlining arrests or specific security measures in response to the latest killings. However, residents said they expect reinforcements to be deployed to forestall further violence.

Plateau State has long battled cycles of communal and armed attacks, with Barkin Ladi remaining one of the flashpoints in the protracted security crisis. Monday’s protest underscores growing frustration among locals who say the human cost of the violence continues to mount.
