Clashes, Tear Gas, As El-Rufai Arrives EFCC HQ for Questioning

February 16, 2026

Rival groups of protesters clashed outside Nigeria’s anti-graft agency in Abuja on Monday as Nasir El-Rufai, a former state governor, arrived to answer questions over alleged corruption.

Supporters and critics of the ex-Kaduna State leader gathered outside the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the Jabi district of the capital, leading to scuffles and the firing of tear gas by security forces to break up the crowds.

Those backing Mr El-Rufai waved placards and chanted slogans accusing the authorities of using anti-corruption agencies to target political opponents. Some said the investigation was punishment for his criticism of President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Across the road, a smaller group of demonstrators called for his prosecution, accusing him of financial misconduct during his eight years as Kaduna governor between 2015 and 2023.

Footage shared on social media showed chaotic scenes as tear gas canisters were fired and protesters scattered, with some vowing to return once the area was cleared.

Mr El-Rufai’s appearance at the EFCC follows a tense incident last week at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where security agents, believed to be from the Department of State Services, attempted to detain him after he arrived from Egypt. His supporters intervened, leading to a standoff and the temporary seizure of his passport. He later described the move as an abuse of executive power.

El-Rufai Faces Criminal Charges for Alleged Interception of NSA Ribadu’s Phone Calls

The former governor arrived at the EFCC offices shortly after 10:00 local time on Monday, although security officials limited access for members of his entourage.

The investigation centres on allegations of mismanagement and misuse of public funds during his time in office. His successor, Uba Sani, has backed efforts to review the previous administration’s finances.

The episode comes amid wider tensions between El-Rufai and the federal authorities. He recently accused the Office of the National Security Adviser of irregularities in a chemical procurement deal, claims which were denied and referred to the DSS. The security service has also filed separate charges against him over alleged interception of communications belonging to the national security adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

There were no immediate reports of serious injuries from Monday’s clashes. The EFCC has not commented on the protests or on the outcome of El-Rufai’s questioning.
