President Bola Tinubu has asked Vice-President Kashim Shettima to lead a federal government delegation to the northern city of Kano to commiserate with traders affected by a major fire at the Singer Market.
The blaze, which started on Saturday evening and burned into the early hours of Sunday, destroyed dozens of shops in one of Kano’s busiest commercial hubs. Local officials say it is the second serious fire at the market in just two weeks, raising fresh concerns about safety standards and fire prevention.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the president’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said the delegation would leave Abuja on Monday to convey Mr Tinubu’s condolences and to pledge federal support for those who lost their livelihoods.

Those travelling with the vice-president include the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, Senator Kawu Ismaila, and the chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abubakar Kabir Bichi. Also joining the delegation are the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Bernard Doro, and the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Zubaida Umar.

President Tinubu has already spoken by phone with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to express his sympathy to the victims and residents affected by the fire.
The president has also ordered a full investigation into the repeated outbreaks at the market, saying urgent steps must be taken to prevent further incidents.
