Saudi Arabia has expressed strong opposition to Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, describing the move as a violation of international law and an endorsement of unilateral separatism, Prime Business Africa reports.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the Kingdom’s “full support for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the sisterly Federal Republic of Somalia,” stressing that any actions undermining Somalia’s unity are unacceptable.
The Ministry said it rejects the declaration of mutual recognition between Israeli authorities and the Somaliland region, warning that such a step amounts to the imposition of parallel entities that contradict Somalia’s internationally recognised borders.

“Saudi Arabia affirms its rejection of any attempts to impose unilateral separatist measures that violate international law,” the statement said, adding that the Kingdom remains committed to supporting Somalia’s legitimate state institutions and preserving stability in the country.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of Somalia’s central government. Although it has operated with its own administration, security forces and electoral system for more than three decades, it has not been recognised as a sovereign state by the United Nations or any UN member country. The international community continues to regard it as part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
Somalia’s federal government has consistently opposed foreign engagements that treat Somaliland as an independent state, arguing that such actions undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Mogadishu has repeatedly cautioned countries against opening diplomatic missions or entering agreements with Somaliland authorities without the consent of the federal government.
Israel’s announcement earlier on Thursday recognising Somaliland represents a significant break from long-standing international consensus and has drawn criticism from Arab and Muslim-majority countries. Saudi Arabia, a long-time diplomatic and humanitarian partner of Somalia, has historically aligned with Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation positions that oppose recognition of breakaway regions without the approval of the parent state.
Riyadh also reiterated its rejection of any measures it believes could destabilise the Horn of Africa, a region already facing security and political challenges, while reaffirming its support for the Somali government and people.
The statement was dated December 26, 2025, corresponding to 6 Rajab 1447 AH in the Islamic calendar.
